I truly believe I live in the most stunning city on earth.
Majestic snow capped mountains frame a city of lakes and waterways, gorgeous buildings, towering evergreens, and in the center of it all, the iconic Space Needle. The cozy gray skies and smell of fresh rain are comforting to me. It's safe to say I love my city. But do I love the people? I do. Well, if I am honest, I try. I do know this - God loves this city and these people!
Seattle is a melting pot of cultures, languages, styles, strong opinions, and brilliant minds. The great majority are extremely liberal in their politics, and many have rejected any form of organized religion and moral absolutes. Yet, there are common themes in belief systems. People here are loving and accepting of alternative lifestyles, exercising sensitivity towards any viewpoints that they believe are judgmental. I really do love my city for its heart toward the disenfranchised.
But as a Christian, how do I infiltrate a culture that is so different from my own in a loving and impactful way? How do I show my fellow Seattleites that my God is a loving, merciful, gracious Father that desires to know them personally? How do I show them that followers of Christ love them? Do I exemplify the heart of the Father to His people?
My heart is to see all of the people in my city impacted by the love of Christ through His people, the Church. We have the honor to know Jesus and to reflect His love to a world that longs to be loved and accepted. Can you imagine what your city would look like if every believer lived in a way that daily showed the gospel Gospel - right where they were?
“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet He is actually not far from each one of us.” - Acts 17:26-27 ESV
We were appointed to this time in history. The place you were born was according to His purpose. Knowing that you were assigned to your city, how can you live as an ambassador of Christ?
- For one, you cannot do it alone. You must be connected to the Source. Spending time in God's word and in prayer is essential to being effective in ministry.
- Get to know your city, its people, and its needs. Pray for your city like it's your job! Every day, God puts people in your path who are desperate to be seen and loved, and you have the privilege of reflecting God's love to a world who desperately needs it.
This calling let us to begin out campaign to "Bless This City,” and we want to invite you to join us.
In the next couple of weeks, we will embark on a campaign to bless the people of our city in both big and small ways. We will be consistent and intentional in the way we pray for our city and we invite you to join us! Join in the work of the Kingdom and bring honor and glory to the name of our God right where you are.
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” - Habakkuk 2:14 ESV
God, help me to love the people of this city as you love them. Give me a great love for the techies, the addicts, the hipsters, the dog lovers, the homeless, the college students, my neighbors and everyone in between. Let this be an overwhelming love that leads to action. Clearly show me ways You long to bless this city through me so that your glory may fill this place as the waters cover the sea. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!
