God Is My Strength

Gabriel and his SOURCE onesie

God is my strength

As Christians, we hear it all the time, we may even claim it. But do we believe it? When you feel like life is too painful, exhausting, and overwhelming, do you ask God to be your strength when you have none left?

When the Phipps family received the most heartbreaking news, God Himself became their only comfort. The phrase ‘God is my strength’ became real. More powerful than their pain, more real than their loss, and more than just a phrase.

So when Danielle reached out to SOURCE in search for the perfect onesie for her son, we were captivated by her powerful testimony. As she shared the tragic story of her son, Gabriel, we were humbled by her strength and courage in the midst of grief. Through the hardest event of her life, God served as her strength. He was faithful, providing comfort, courage, and filling her with strength to endure. She allowed us to share her story in hopes that it would provide hope to anyone suffering and questioning God’s goodness.

The Phipps family was elated when they found out they were expecting their third child. This joy quickly turned into fear as Danielle began bleeding at 14 weeks. Through tests and an ultrasound, the doctors found that the tiny baby’s bladder was twice the average size. This concerned the doctors enough to send her to a specialist 180 miles away. The Phipps family made the long trek to the appointment with high hopes that their baby would be healthy.

Relief set in when the nurse told them that the baby’s measurements were good, but as the nurse’s face contorted, they became alarmed. Danielle will never forget the nurse’s flat words: “Something is wrong. I think I need to get the doctor.”

Something was wrong. The doctor came in, and their fears were confirmed. Danielle and her husband were told that their sweet baby had a chromosomal abnormality and that the final diagnosis could be one of three things: Spina Bifida, Trisomy 13, or Trisomy 18 and they were sent to a genetic counselor. Fear, terror, praying. Lots of praying.

Two long days later, they got the call. The waiting was over. Their son was diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a chromosome abnormality where there are three copies of the 18th chromosome. They were flatly told that their son was “not compatible with life” and that it would be surprising if he made it to 20 weeks. They gave them the option to terminate the pregnancy.

It was devastating to imagine losing their sweet baby boy, but Danielle knew that choosing to end his life before God did was not an option. All Danielle could do was cling to God and pray for a miracle.

However, through her agony, fear, and questions, she never grew angry. She maintained an inner peace that only the Holy Spirit could provide. All of her questions forced her to lean on God more than ever. Her faith grew rich and deep.

When it came time to name their baby boy, they chose Gabriel, which means “God is my strength.” His life was a testimony that God is faithful. He does not promise a pain-free existence. He vows to be there with us in the midst of it. The God of the universe could empathize with the deep agony that comes from losing a child. God provided her supernatural strength.

As Danielle began to accept that Gabriel would enter into this world in a very small body, she began to search for something meaningful to dress him in. She longed to dress her little boy, look him in the eyes, and tell him very how loved he was, no matter how small. She wanted something that was a declaration of who he was and reflected this season of their life. This was when Danielle reached out to us.

When Danielle’s email landed in our inbox, we knew right away we wanted to create a special onesie for Gabriel. We came up with a design with the meaning of Gabriel’s name on it. We felt so privileged to be able to be a small part of their story.

At the beginning of September, Danielle and her husband got the worst news expecting parents could receive: there was no heartbeat to be found in her baby’s tiny chest. After a long and painful labor, Danielle brought her stillborn son into the world on September 2, 2016. Gabriel weighed 2.8 pounds and was 11.8 inches long. They spent several precious hours with their son—taking photos, having the hospital chaplain baptize him and perform a memorial. Danielle found peace knowing that they did everything they could for their beloved son.

Danielle’s heart of courage to trust God in the midst of immense pain and her brave decision to carry her son as long as God intended is incredible. Upon returning home, Danielle began pumping and donating milk, in Gabriel’s name, to a NICU. She and her husband, have started raising awareness for Trisomy 18.

We continue to be so moved by Danielle’s story. She is such a beautiful example of what it looks like to lean into Christ during an unthinkable situation. When God is your source of hope and strength, he will carry you through the hardest of trials. It’s not just a trite saying, Danielle’s life reflects this to the fullest extent.

So thank you, Danielle, for your bravery in sharing your journey with us and allowing us the opportunity to create a treasured piece for you and your family.

Giving: Lump to Laughter

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we had the opportunity to donate some tote bags to a wonderful organization, Lump to Laughter.

Lump to Laughter is a Christian organization that is dedicated to providing support to those diagnosed with breast cancer and helping them share their stories. It was started by two friends who diagnosed six weeks apart from each other and were walking the journey of breast cancer together. Their joint diagnoses convinced them that God wanted them to turn this trial into a triumph and they have done just that. They have created a beautiful space for community and encouragement along with providing emotional and monetary support. We love that they are helping women use this trial to grow fear into faith.

We were moved by their story and their mission and wanted to support their efforts. This led us to donate tote bags with the phrase, Eshet Chayil which means “women of valor” in Hebrew, referencing Proverbs 31. This passage is a blessing, celebrating womanhood, and how a woman of valor embodies perseverance and strength. We are celebrating these brave and strong women, who truly are women of valor.

How can you encourage the strong women in your life? What does being a woman of valor look like or feel like to you? We are all created to be this woman, and everyday we not only have the opportunity to be women of valor, but also the chance to love and encourage others. Let’s celebrate all the strong women in our lives by lifting each other up and encouraging them to be who God made them. Eshet Chayil!

Check out Lump to Laughter’s website and consider how you may be able to support them in their mission.

Source Accessories + Home Launch

We've been so excited about the response we have received about our Fall Collection of shirts! When we started to plan what was next for Source, we couldn't help but feel something was missing. We wanted a way for our customers to share God's truth beyond a t-shirt.

For those of you who have followed us for some time, you know that we've dabbled in necklaces and Christmas prints. We spent a lot of time thinking about what we should introduce next as a part of our Accessories + Home Launch. We tried pillows, thought about pouches. Ultimately, we ended up with five new categories that you're going to love.

Personally, I think these are the ones I'm most excited about! How gorgeous are these cases?! They come in sizes for iPhone 6 and 6 plus. Anna and I have had ours on our phones for a month or two now and constantly are getting complimented.

These phone cases make perfect gifts for friends or, of course, yourself.

Shop them here.

Tote bags aren't new for Source. We've always had our zippered tote that is a great catch-all bag and the perfect size for a weekend getaway. But we wanted to add something that was a little more structured and not so wide.

The Shopper Tote fits the bill perfectly. It's a great size, 14.75" x 14.75" and expands open with a roomy square bottom. I'll be taking this bag with me to the grocery store (yay no free bags in Seattle!) and throwing my laptop and art supplies in it on my way to the coffee shop.

Hats are a girl's best friend. Every bad hair day ever can be cured by a simple trick: throwing on a hat. And when it comes to hats, we've got you covered. Whether you're more #sportyspice or #cozyspice (that's a thing, right??), these hats will become staples in your wardrobe.

This category is our biggest of the launch, with seven different styles. We were searching for a gift at a lower price point and mugs are our answer! They're super-affordable at $14.50 and since there's no sizing involved, they make a great gift for just about anyone you know.

Shop them here.

Along with mugs, another great gift option is the prints. They each come in several different sizes, as small as 8x10" and as large as 20x30" (my personal fave). These are beautiful, artful reminders of God's love and truth to display in your home.

Source is One!

Did you know Source just celebrated a big milestone? Our FIRST birthday! We can't believe it! This year has been a wild ride and we're so incredibly thankful first and foremost to Jesus and, of course, to all of you! We can't believe all that God has done with Source so far and will continue to do in the years (God-willing!) to come!

With all this excitement, we thought it would be fun to introduce our new tops we've been teasing all summer. Designing this line with Anna was so much fun. Choosing the best designs to share with you all was so hard, we were bursting with tons of great ideas. So many good things happened when we sat down to create a collection that brought together our love of fashion with our excitement for opportunities to tell others about the love of Jesus.

I'll start by telling you our inspiration for the line: minimal, contemporary, casual, and quirky. We've been crushing hard on everything cool-girl with a weird edge. See: cat ears, mom jeans, shoes that make some say "uh, ooookay."

Now I'll show you what I mean. Here's some pieces we photographed in a shoot last week with our photographer, Athena Grace. To see the new collection of tops in its entirety, check them out here.

Salty | Terry Raw Edge Raglan

We love this reclaiming of the word Salty, which nowadays is a slang term with kind of negative connotations, but Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth!

Beloved | Terry Raw Edge Raglan

The aforementioned mom jeans and "weird" shoes.

Ephesians 2:8-9 | Crewneck Tee

Taking style cues from our 90s childhoods with a button-up-the-front corduroy skirt but updating it with a super-cozy, oversized cardigan.

It Is Finished | Large Tote

More mom jeans – yes please.

Source | Relaxed Tee

Ultra-fuzzy sweaters might be the only thing getting me excited for fall.

We hope you love this new collection and they become staples in your closet as much as they are in ours. Above all, our hope and prayer is that when wearing these pieces you're reminded of, and presented with opportunities to tell others, about the love of Jesus.

Giving: AnnieCannons

“We stand for the proposition that no one with the insight or potential to change the world should be ignored because of her gender, race or previous condition of servitude.” – AnnieCannons Mission Statement

The most soul-satisfying part of running a business that loves to give back, is discovering amazing organizations from all over the world to share a portion of our profits with. When you make a purchase with Source, you’re joining us in supporting great organizations that are doing good and loving others.

AnnieCannons' purpose is to train survivors of sex trafficking with one of today's most lucrative skills: computer programing. Many survivors of the sex trafficking trade are left fighting for ways to make something more of themselves with little to no education or resources. They desperately want out of their situation, but are overcome with the struggle to find a valuable and empowering place in society – two things sex trafficking steals.

The kind people at AnnieCannons stand by these women, and are committed to teaching them a trade that will help them tremendously as they start to rebuild their lives. They find value and worth in these women and are willing to do whatever it takes to support them, by giving them opportunities they might not have had in the past. We encourage you to visit their website anniecannons.com for more information, along with ways to donate and/or volunteer.

All that to say, when my sweet friend McKinley Smith came to us and asked if Source would like to support these women, of course we said yes! We were able to provide three graduates with brand-new, stylish outfits for interviews and to jumpstart their professional wardrobes.

By gifting them with something new and beautiful to wear, we are showing them that we love them, believe in them, and are cheering them on in their new life. It's exactly what God the Father does for us: He clothes us in strength and dignity so we can look forward to the the future with hope. He is the one who covers us with his feathers and gives us strength to go on when things get hard. He calls us his beloved and he sees us all as his beautiful, redeemed daughters.

Our prayer for all the women who come out of the program is that they know that Jesus is the SOURCE of redemption, healing , and hope. We pray they feel empowered by His love and grace, that they would feel His strength, and that they would be able to look forward to the future with hope in Christ.

The Big Sale

As we make room for some new and exciting product this fall, all of our current stock is on sale. Everything is 20% off, so if there is something that you have been waiting to purchase, now is the time as we will likely not be releasing these original Source designs again.

A few of our favorites are the handmade 'Seek' necklaces with lettering from Elizabeth Loves Paper. There are only a few silver and gold necklaces left in stock! Anna wears her almost daily, by itself or layered with other necklaces. What a sweet gift to give to someone just starting their relationship with Jesus, or for yourself, to remind you to seek him in all things, and keep seeking what he has planned for the story he has written for you.

Another favorite is the 'Know Hope' tote which is on sale for only $15 (more than 20% off!). A perfectly sized bag that serves as a reminder that knowing Hope and having hope are different things. We see this tote being a great conversation starter to share about the hope in Jesus and how knowing him gives actual true hope.

This is our first big sale and we're excited to be able to offer you our entire line at 20% off. Our prayer, with every purchase, is that wearing your Source product reminds you of Jesus' love for you and gives you the opportunity to share that love with the people in your life!

Bless This City

I truly believe I live in the most stunning city on earth.
Majestic snow capped mountains frame a city of lakes and waterways, gorgeous buildings, towering evergreens, and in the center of it all, the iconic Space Needle. The cozy gray skies and smell of fresh rain are comforting to me. It's safe to say I love my city. But do I love the people? I do. Well, if I am honest, I try. I do know this - God loves this city and these people!
Seattle is a melting pot of cultures, languages, styles, strong opinions, and brilliant minds. The great majority are extremely liberal in their politics, and many have rejected any form of organized religion and moral absolutes. Yet, there are common themes in belief systems. People here are loving and accepting of alternative lifestyles, exercising sensitivity towards any viewpoints that they believe are judgmental. I really do love my city for its heart toward the disenfranchised.
But as a Christian, how do I infiltrate a culture that is so different from my own in a loving and impactful way? How do I show my fellow Seattleites that my God is a loving, merciful, gracious Father that desires to know them personally? How do I show them that followers of Christ love them? Do I exemplify the heart of the Father to His people?
My heart is to see all of the people in my city impacted by the love of Christ through His people, the Church. We have the honor to know Jesus and to reflect His love to a world that longs to be loved and accepted. Can you imagine what your city would look like if every believer lived in a way that daily showed the gospel Gospel - right where they were?
“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet He is actually not far from each one of us.” - Acts‬ ‭17:26-27‬ ‭ESV‬‬
We were appointed to this time in history. The place you were born was according to His purpose. Knowing that you were assigned to your city, how can you live as an ambassador of Christ?
  • For one, you cannot do it alone. You must be connected to the Source. Spending time in God's word and in prayer is essential to being effective in ministry.
  • Get to know your city, its people, and its needs. Pray for your city like it's your job! Every day, God puts people in your path who are desperate to be seen and loved, and you have the privilege of reflecting God's love to a world who desperately needs it.
This calling let us to begin out campaign to "Bless This City,” and we want to invite you to join us.
In the next couple of weeks, we will embark on a campaign to bless the people of our city in both big and small ways. We will be consistent and intentional in the way we pray for our city and we invite you to join us! Join in the work of the Kingdom and bring honor and glory to the name of our God right where you are.
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” - Habakkuk‬ ‭2:14‬ ‭ESV‬‬
God, help me to love the people of this city as you love them. Give me a great love for the techies, the addicts, the hipsters, the dog lovers, the homeless, the college students, my neighbors and everyone in between. Let this be an overwhelming love that leads to action. Clearly show me ways You long to bless this city through me so that your glory may fill this place as the waters cover the sea. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!
